In 2024, Chantelle and Ashley Petterson took their first step toward a long-term goal: creating more freedom for their future. With dreams of starting a family, a shared love of sport and travel, and a vision for passive income, they invested with PMG.

“We were exploring a number of investment options when we came across PMG in an investor magazine,” says Chantelle. “My husband reached out and had an in-person meeting with the Investor Relationships Manager at the time. He was impressed with the products, the service, and the fact that PMG team members also invest in their funds.”

With a clear goal of creating passive income streams to enjoy more time together – and eventually with their future children – the couple was drawn to commercial property investing as a long-term, hands-off strategy.

From active to passive investment

Over time, their investment strategy has evolved. While they remain diversified across residential property, commercial property, and shares, they’ve found themselves leaning more into truly passive investments.

“PMG looks after everything – from the property purchases and tenants to the ongoing maintenance. That gives us the time and headspace to focus on our lives and long-term goals.”

Long-term value

Like many of PMG’s investors, Chantelle and Ashley have a clear set of criteria when evaluating opportunities:

“For the investment itself: yield (gross, net, and cash), capital growth potential, and long-term value, including how easy it might be to exit down the track.

“For the investment manager: trust, transparency, and a strong relationship. We want to know the company has our best interests at heart, and that we can rely on the information they provide to make informed decisions.”

They’re methodical when it comes to risk, highlighting that it’s important to do background research, considering economic conditions, location and market trends. “It’s not just about the numbers – there’s always a gut check involved too,” says Chantelle.

Future-focused

Their investment approach will remain hands-off, though as their property portfolio matures, they expect to diversify more into shares to balance out exposure.

Their advice for others just getting started?

“Be patient and stay committed. Investing is a long-term game and you’ll only see the benefits if you stay the course,” says Chantelle.
